Focus not time

Time management tips

Focus not time

I had to spend the morning at the hospital last week (I’m fine now!) and I needed something fun to do when I got back. So, inspired by Vicki Jakes’ call out for time management tips, I made some videos. Here’s the second video in the series – the transcript is underneath. If you missed the first one, it’s here. Edit: Vicki has now created a podcast episode combining her own tips with techniques contributed by some of her friends and clients – including some of these.

Tip number 2: Focus NOT time

Another technique I wanted to share is this. Actually, time management isn’t really about time itself because we’ve all got 168 hours in a week and that doesn’t change. Managing time is really about focus time. Sounds obvious, but you’ve got to know how you best focus. So I’ll give you an example. In order for me to focus better, I need to make sure I get enough sleep. I have a meditation practice. I go on walks. Now these things might not seem immediately obvious if you think about actually sitting down to focus, but all of those things enable me to focus and enable me to think things through.

It helps if you work out what the best kind of focus is for you. I grew up in a hotel, my parents ran a hotel, so I’m used to having noise around me and I think that’s why I don’t like focusing in complete silence, but you might be the sort of person that does like to focus in complete silence, so working on your focus and knowing how you focus best is really important.

I’ve written more about focus time for writers in this post.

The next video in this series is here.

My book on time management is here.

More soon. Until then, happy writing,
